In the summer of 1992, a
group of people met with the Gold Wing Road Riders Association's, Tennessee
State Director John Koty, to ask the question:
"Is there enough room in Blount County for one more GWRRA chapter"? After
looking at an area map, Mr. Koty gave the nod
that there was room for another chapter.
The members of that fact
finding trip were Johnny King, Kleeta Ryan, Dave
& Pat McCullough. Mr. Koty gave instructions on what had to be done as
requirements to start a new chapter. This is when
WC Huffman (Biggin)
was approached to be the new "Area Representative"
as it was called in those days. His job was to try to get enough people
interested in starting a new chapter to come and meet. The number of people
required
in those days to meet was ten people, and they had to have a monthly meeting for
three months to be recognized as a group interested in starting
a new chapter.
The group met at
different locations for the next few months. It was hard
to get that number together at the same time. It wasn't
that no one was interested, just everybody's schedule would not let them be
off at the same time every week, but finally it all came together.
After the first
of 1993, a date and place was chosen for our kick off. The date
was April 17, 1993 and was held at Heritage High School. Over 100 people came from all
corners of the state to help with the kick off. It was at this time, when Mr.
John Koty presented to us, our Chapter Charter.
Our first official
meeting place was at Quincy's Steak House located
in the Foothills Mall area.
Some of the original Charter
Members were Adlai and
Linda Owens, Johnny King, Kleeta Ryan, Dave &
Pat McCullough, Mike & Debbie & Kari Brooks, Roger Elliott, Clarence White,
Dale Burchfield, Terry & Teresa Jones and Wilbur
Huffman.
